Second cell-cultured food application opens for consultation

Published

Public consultation is currently open on an application to permit the use of cell-cultured duck as a food ingredient.

This marks the second cell-cultured food to be assessed by FSANZ, following the approval of cell-cultured quail in 2025. That approval established new requirements in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code for the production, sale and labelling of cell-cultured foods.

The latest Consumer Insights Tracker findings suggest many Australians and New Zealanders are still becoming familiar with new and emerging foods, with up to 53% of those surveyed saying they had never heard of cell-cultured foods.

Public consultation for Application A1341 closes on 22 July 2026. Feedback received during consultation will help inform FSANZ's assessment before a decision on whether to approve this food ingredient is made.
