AUSNUT 2023 was developed for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to use in the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Study, which includes the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) and the 2023 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS).
It contains all the data needed to help the ABS turn the information about foods and dietary supplements people reported into food, dietary supplement and nutrient intakes. It also contains information to help you interpret the data and compare data with previous surveys.
The term ‘dietary supplement’ refers to products consumed orally which are not considered a food or a medicine but may contain nutrients of interest to the surveys.
For more information see AUSNUT 2023 – Dietary supplement details (Excel, 166KB).
Nutrients
The term ‘nutrient’ refers to traditional nutrients like vitamins and minerals, as well as other components of interest, like caffeine. The 39 nutrients included in the AUSNUT 2023 dietary supplement database were chosen based on the study’s reporting requirements.
For more information about the nutrients reported see AUSNUT 2023 – List of nutrients (Excel, 73KB).
For the full list of dietary supplements with their associated nutrient content see AUSNUT 2023 – Dietary supplement nutrient profiles (Excel, 283KB).
Sources of formulation data
AUSNUT 2023 nutrient composition data for dietary supplements is largely based on formulation information from the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.
