On 6 October 2026, the FSANZ Board approved changes to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the use of cell-cultured duck biomass in combination with other ingredients to make products such as foie gras and pâté.
The application has been assessed under FSANZ’s general procedure and had one round of public consultation.
Our risk assessment identified no public health or safety concerns associated with either the production cell line or the resulting biomass.
Consultation and assessment
FSANZ released the public call for submissions in June 2026. Feedback from this consultation, along with our scientific assessment, informed our final decision.
