Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for submissions on an application to permit the use of a nutritive substance in formulated supplementary foods for young children (FSFYC).
The nutritive substance - bovine milk fat globule membrane-enriched whey protein concentrate (MFGM-WPC) - contains lipids and proteins found in both human and cow milk.
The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) already permits MFGM-WPC as a nutritive substance in infant formula products.
FSANZ’s assessment found that MFGM-WPC is a suitable ingredient for use in formulated supplementary foods for young children. Its use is consistent with its intended purpose to restore and enrich MFGM-derived components and support immune function, and it does not raise any health or safety concerns for children aged 1–3 years.
FSFYC are regulated as special purpose foods intended to supplement the diets of children aged 1–3 years in limited circumstances. FSFYC sold in Australia and New Zealand must comply with the composition and labelling requirements outlined in the Code.
To have your say on this application, visit the FSANZ Consultation Hub. Submissions close at 11.59pm (AEST) 6 August 2026.
What happens to my feedback?
FSANZ will consider all feedback received through this submission process before deciding on whether to approve the application.
