Food Regulation: Public policy approaches and issues

In 2006 FSANZ commissioned the University of New South Wales to prepare a literature review on Food Regulation: Public policy approaches and issues. The review was prepared by Dr Linda Botterill and sets out the following:

  • a brief history of food regulation,
  • the role of government and the role of values in the policy process,
  • the role of the state in a liberal democracy, and
  • the role of food in our lives.

The paper then draws these ideas together in a case study of the contemporary debate over appropriate government responses to obesity and overweight, in an attempt to highlight the role facts, values and evidence play in policy development.
