Help shape the future of Health Star Ratings

Published

What if health stars became a standard feature on food labels?

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has begun developing a proposal to consider making the front-of-pack Health Star Rating (HSR) system mandatory.

The HSR system is currently voluntary. However, uptake remains well below the 70% target agreed by Australian and New Zealand food ministers, with fewer than 40% of intended products displaying the rating. This gap has prompted renewed consideration of whether a voluntary approach can deliver consistent, trusted nutrition information for consumers.

Consultation will be central to our proposal process. Anyone with an interest in food labelling will be able to share their views and help inform FSANZ’s assessment.

Now is the time to start thinking about what this could mean for public health, food businesses, consumers and the way nutrition information is presented on packs.
