What do you think about most packaged foods having a Health Star Rating (HSR)?
Public consultation is now open on Proposal P1067 – Health Star Rating System, which considers whether the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) should be amended to require packaged foods sold in Australia and New Zealand to display a HSR symbol.
This is the first opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal and the assessment that underpins it.
FSANZ’s assessment indicates a mandatory HSR system could improve consistency, comparability and accessibility of nutrition information.
Proposed approaches include requiring the HSR symbol on most packaged foods which must carry a nutrition information panel, standardising the design and placement of the symbol and applying a prescribed method for calculating ratings.
Consultation feedback will play a central role in informing next steps, including whether we progress to draft regulatory measures. Further public consultation on a draft variation will follow before a final decision is made.
Webinars will be held to support stakeholder understanding of the proposed approaches. Submissions close 21 June 2026.
