FSANZ Board Communique: 4 February 2026 VC Meeting

Overview

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Board met on 4 February 2026 to discuss and decide on standards matters.

The FSANZ Board is the accountable authority for the agency.

Matter for Decision notified to the Food Ministers’ Meeting

Once notified, the Food Ministers’ Meeting (FMM)has 60 days to consider FSANZ Board decisions on standards matters. If no review is sought, the changes are given legal effect in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

The following decision was notified to the FMM on 18 February:

The Board approved amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to: 

  • include compositional fat requirements for Special Medical Purpose Product for infants that were considered and approved in Proposal P1028 that were inadvertently omitted. the amendments made by Proposal P1028 are subject to a five-year transitional arrangement. During this five-year period, Special Medical Purpose Product for infants may be sold if they comply with either the Code as in force (as if the variation had not taken effect) or the Code as amended by the approved variations.
  • correct other omissions, inconsistencies, formatting issues and typographical errors in the Code; and
  • update references in the Code.

The Board’s decision has been notified to the FMM for consideration, in accordance with statutory processes.

New Board member

The FSANZ Board welcomed its newest member, Professor Anna Rangan.

Professor Rangan, Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Sydney and Program Director of the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, brings valuable expertise to the FSANZ Board.  

Acknowledgement 

The Board recognised the outstanding contributions of FSANZ staff to the Australian National Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria 2022–23 report, which was released on 6 February 2026. 

It also acknowledged the recently published FSANZ research on Labelling of plant-based alternative protein products and dairy alternatives conducted for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.  

The Board's next meeting will be held on 10 & 11 March 2026.
