Australian food recall data for 2025 is now available on our website.
FSANZ coordinated 92 food recalls in 2025, above the 10-year average of 87. Recalls represent a minor proportion of the overall food supply, with only a small number linked to reported illness or injury.
Mixed and processed foods continued to be the most frequently recalled product category. Undeclared allergens remained the leading cause of food recalls, accounting for 38% of all food recalls in 2025. Milk, wheat and gluten, and tree nuts were the most common allergens, with packaging errors, accidental cross contamination and failure to communicate ingredient changes the main contributing factors.
The data highlights the proactive work of food businesses and regulators in quickly removing potentially unsafe food from the market, reflecting the effectiveness of routine safety checks and the ongoing importance of clear and accurate labelling, strong supplier controls and recall readiness.
Food manufacturers, importers and wholesalers are required to maintain a food recall plan, in accordance with the Food Industry Food Recall Protocol.
