Sodium levels in a range of packaged and take-away foods Introduction The level of sodium intake by Australians has been of growing interest in recent times. Most of the sodium in our food comes from sodium chloride (table salt), which is added to foods for flavour and as a preservative. Sodium also occurs naturally in almost all foods and can be present in processed foods due to the use of some food additives, for example, sodium bicarbonate (bi-carb soda or baking soda) used as a raising agent in cakes and biscuits. In order to gather additional information on levels of sodium in a range of foods, FSANZ conducted an analytical survey of some packaged and take-away foods available in New South Wales and Western Australia. Sports Foods Consumption in Australia and New Zealand (2013) (July 2017) The quantitative research described in this report is the second of two related pieces of work undertaken by FSANZ with users of sports-related food products. The initial research, undertaken in mid-2010, used a set of focus groups to provide qualitative information on consumer attitudes and behaviours towards sports-related food products. This research assisted in scoping and designing the current research. This piece of research, conducted in 2012, used a telephone survey to collect data from a simple random sample of Australians and New Zealanders aged 15 years or older to understand the socio-demographic characteristics and consumption behaviours of sports-related food products. Second call for comment on the review of permissions for caffeine in food Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is undertaking a second round of public consultation on its review of the addition of caffeine to food. Proposed amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) aim to clarify the regulations around the retail sale of caffeine and its addition to food.  FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said the review followed changes to the Code in 2019, which prohibited the retail sale of pure and highly concentrated caffeine products. “This review has considered whether additional measures are required in relation to caffeine in food, particularly formulated supplementary sports foods,” Dr Cuthbert said. “A number of amendments to the regulation of caffeine in foods are proposed to ensure the continued protection of…
