Reducing acrylamide exposure in food
Reducing acrylamide exposure in food FSANZ is working with international food regulators and the food industry to look at ways to reduce consumer exposure to acrylamide. If you're a food manufacturer or producer it's important that you take steps to reduce the level of acrylamide in your food to as low as reasonably achievable. To help you do this, Food and Drink Europe has developed a toolkit with strategies to help reduce levels of acrylamide formation during the manufacturing process and in agriculture practices. Not all methods will apply to your industry, but the toolbox is a good way to help you evaluate your current production methods and recipes and which strategies can be best applied to your business. You can access the Acrylamide toolbox from the Food and Drink Europe…

About food recalls
About food recalls A food recall is action taken by a food business to remove unsafe food from distribution, sale and consumption. All food businesses must be able to quickly remove food from the marketplace to protect public health and safety. FSANZ coordinates food recalls in Australia. In New Zealand, food recalls are coordinated by the Ministry for Primary Industries. FSANZ cannot order or force a recall because it has no enforcement powers. These powers rest with the jurisdictions. However most recalls are initiated by food businesses. Please note: the information below applies only within Australia. Proposal P265 - Development of a Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood At the time of the development of Standard 4.2.1 Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood in Chapter 4 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code there was uncertainty regarding the presence of algal toxin in pearl oyster meat and therefore in the ranking of the risks associated with this product. Research published in 2009 indicates that there is no accumulation of biotoxins in the pearl oyster adductor muscles. The research is described in Murray SA et al., (2009) Differential accumulation of paralytic shellfish toxins from Alexandrium minutum in the pearl oyster, Pinctada imbricata, Toxicon 54 (3): 217-223. FSANZ risk assessment on antibiotic use in New Zealand apples
FSANZ risk assessment on antibiotic use in New Zealand apples (13 May 2011) FSANZ has completed a risk assessment on the use of antimicrobials in some New Zealand apple orchards in response to concerns about possible health and safety risks. The antimicrobial, streptomycin is used in a small proportion of New Zealand apple orchards (about five per cent) to control the plant disease fire blight. Following its risk assessment FSANZ has concluded there is a negligible food safety concern. This view has been confirmed by internationally recognised experts in the field of antimicrobial resistance, who have peer-reviewed the FSANZ assessment. Key points from the risk assessment:
- Only a small proportion of apple orchards in New Zealand are treated with streptomycin during each growing season (less than five per cent in 2009-10).…
