FSANZ Board Communique: 9 & 10 December Meeting

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Board met on 9 and 10 December 2025 to discuss and decide on standards matters.

Matters for Decision notified to the Food Ministers’ Meeting

The following decisions were notified on 18 December 2025. The Food Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) has 60 days to consider FSANZ Board decisions on standards matters:

A1292 - Phospholipase C from Bacillus licheniformis as a processing aid

The Board approved Application A1292 from Novozymes Australia Pty Ltd to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the use of the enzyme phospholipase C from Bacillus licheniformis to be used as a processing aid in degumming of fats and oils, aiding in the removal of phospholipids during oil processing.

The Board approved Application A1293 from Novozymes Australia Pty Ltd to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the use of the enzyme phosphoinositide phospholipase C from Bacillus licheniformis as a processing aid in degumming vegetable fats and oils, aiding in the removal of phospholipids during oil processing.

A1328 - Aminopeptidase from Trichoderma reesei as a processing aid

The Board approved Application A1328 from IFF Australia Pty Ltd (Trading as Danisco Australia Pty Ltd) to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the use of the enzyme Aminopeptidase Y derived from Trichoderma reesei for use as a processing aid in protein and yeast processing and flavour production.

Other matters

Ministerial discussion

The Board welcomed the Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Hon Julie Collins MP, for a strategic discussion on the development of the National Food Security Strategy. The Minister provided key insights into Government priorities for ongoing collaboration across portfolios which contribute to safe and healthy food outcomes now and a productive and sustainable food system into the future.

Strategic discussions

The Board received updates on and discussed approaches to several proposals and projects, including:

  • Proposal P1056: Caffeine Review
  • Commercial Foods for Infants and Young Children
  • Health Star Rating
  • Nutrition Information Panel Review 

The Board welcomed representatives from the Office of Impact Analysis who provided valuable insights for a strategic discussion on FSANZ’s approach to cost benefit analysis and opportunities to further strengthen the integration of economic analysis in regulatory decision-making. 

Governance, risk and performance

The Board considered the revised Board Charter and Board Governance Manual. It considered the updated enterprise risk register and revised risk statements and was provided with updates on Human Resources and the Work Health and Safety.

The Board recognised and expressed appreciation for the contributions and dedication of FSANZ staff in supporting a productive and successful 2025.
