Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to permit the use of an enzyme as a processing aid.
Endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8) is produced using Bacillus licheniformis containing the endo-1,4-beta-xylanase gene from Chryseobacterium cucumeris.
The application seeks approval to use endo-1,4-beta-xylanase when producing potable alcohol and starch and gluten fractions. The enzyme helps break down xylans naturally found in grains, during processing, and does not have any function in the final food.
Our safety assessment found no public health or safety concerns with the proposed use of the enzyme.
To have your say on this application, visit the FSANZ Consultation Hub. Submissions close at 11.59pm (Canberra time) on 29 January 2026.
What happens to my feedback?
FSANZ will consider all feedback received through this submission process before deciding on whether to approve the application.
Submissions will be published to our website as soon as possible at the end of the public comment period.
