FSANZ Board Communique: 26 March 2025 Meeting

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Board met on 26 March 2025 to discuss and decide on standards matters, as well as governance, organisational, performance, and strategic matters. 

Overview 

The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Board held an extraordinary meeting on the 26 March 2025 to consider standards matters for decision. 

The FSANZ Board is the accountable authority for the agency.  

Matters for Decision notified to the Food Ministers’ Meeting

Once notified, the Food Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) has 60 days to consider FSANZ Board decisions on standards matters. The following decisions will be notified: 

A1269 Cultured quail as a novel food 

The Board approved an application from Vow Group Pty Ltd to permit the use of cultured quail cells as a novel food ingredient in food products to be marketed and sold in Australia and New Zealand in accordance with the requirements of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (the FSANZ Act).  

P1049 Carbohydrate and sugar claims on alcoholic beverages 

The Board approved the draft proposal to clarify requirements in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code with respect to claims about carbohydrate content and the components of carbohydrate (such as sugar) in relation to food (including alcoholic beverages) that contains more than 1.15% alcohol by volume (ABV). 

P1059 Energy labelling on alcoholic beverages 

The Board approved the draft proposal to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to require energy (kilojoule) labelling information on alcoholic beverages. Regarding the proposals relating to alcohol, the Board highlighted the importance of education about new regulatory measures together with existing arrangements to support consumer understanding, as well as monitoring and evaluation of the impacts.  The Board acknowledged the substantial work of the teams involved in the above decision matters, with mention of their scientific expertise and collaboration, with input from diverse stakeholder groups which were instrumental in supporting the Board’s consideration.
