Evaluating benefits and costs of food regulation:a scoping study
Evaluating benefits and costs of food regulation:a scoping study March 2002 Full version [ PDF 237 kb ] The Australia New Zealand Food Authority commissioned a scoping study to examine the feasibility of developing an econometric model (or suite of quantitative techniques) that would quantify the impact of food regulation on the economy. The Authority was particularly interested in the inputs to an econometric model and quantitative methods to measure the benefits of food regulation. The scoping study contains a proposal for an integrated framework, in preference to a single econometric model, for reasons of transparency and flexibility in choosing quantitative techniques appropriate for each regulatory change. The integrated…

Assigning foods and portions reported to AUSNUT 2011-13 data
Assigning foods and portions reported to AUSNUT 2011-13 data Each food consumed in the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS), is coded to a nutrient profile, which has a 5-digit food classifcation code associated with it and one or more measures to enable the gram amount of food consumed to be calculated. General process for assigning food and portion information FSANZ worked with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to ensure each food and portion reported was coded to an appropriate food descriptor with an associated nutrient profile and measure descriptor in AUSNUT 2011-13. Foods and portions were coded using the key steps outlined below. FSANZ food and measure descriptors provided to the ABS…

APEC Food Safety Risk Communication Framework and Associated Guidelines
APEC Food Safety Risk Communication Framework and Associated Guidelines The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Safety Risk Communication Framework and its associated Guidelines (the Framework) was endorsed by APEC members in 2022. With funding from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, FSANZ played a leading role in developing this Framework. The Framework details international best practices in effective food safety risk communication and provides practical guidance on food safety communication during food safety incidents or emergency situations, as well as everyday food safety communication. The Framework will be a key global reference for food safety regulators and risk communicators into the future.…

Labelling and providing information about food sold at fundraising events
Labelling and providing information about food sold at fundraising events The rules for the labelling of all foods sold or prepared for sale in Australia and New Zealand are set out in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Food sold at fundraising events is exempt from most of these labelling requirements. A fundraising event means an event that raises money solely for charitable or community causes and not for personal financial gain. However despite these general exemptions, certain information must always be provided when relevant. Other information must be provided if the customer requests it. There are ways that the required information must be provided, depending on the type of information and whether the food is…

Development of additional nutrient profiles for foods and beverages consumed in the NNPAS
Development of additional nutrient profiles for foods and beverages consumed in the NNPAS As food consumption was reported from the 2011-12 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) component of the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS), FSANZ developed new nutrient profiles for reported foods and beverages that were not present in the core dataset. As with the development of the core dataset, a range of techniques were used to generate these nutrient profiles. The most common techniques were:
- Recipe calculations
- Modifying an existing nutrient profile using label data and imputation
- Creating 'not further defined' lines

Development of additional nutrient profiles for foods and beverages consumed in the NATSINPAS
Development of additional nutrient profiles for foods and beverages consumed in the NATSINPAS After the nutrient database for the 2011-12 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) component of the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS) had been finalised, new nutrient profiles were created for additional foods (and beverages) consumed during the 2012-13 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) as needed. New nutrient profiles were generated for:
- foods that were unique to the NATSINPAS such as wild caught fish and meat, wild harvested fruit and vegetables, insects, jackaroo flour based products etc that were not present in the nutrient database developed for the NNPAS…

Call for comment to extend the use of rosemary extract as a food additive
Call for comment to extend the use of rosemary extract as a food additive Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for comment on an application to amend the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) to extend the use of rosemary extract as a food additive. FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said rosemary extract is already permitted in the Code for use as a food additive in certain foods up to specified maximum permitted levels (MPLs). “The use of the antioxidant properties of rosemary extract in food is well documented in the scientific literature," Dr Cuthbert said. “Based on the safety and dietary exposure assessments conducted by FSANZ, there is no evidence of a public health and safety concern associated with extending the use of rosemary extract as a food additive." The application is seeking to extend the use of rosemary…

Consumer Research Investigating the Use of Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods
Consumer Research Investigating the Use of Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods (August 2010) In 2010, Colmar Brunton Research was commissioned by FSANZ to conduct research investigating the cognitive and behaviour approaches to purchasing and consuming sports foods and sports drinks. The findings inform the risk analysis processes required in the review of Standard 2.9.4 Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods. A series of ten 90 minute face-to-face focus groups, with segmented groups, were conducted across Australia and New Zealand. Participant groups included: people consuming sports foods and drinks and engaging in physical activity; people not engaging in physical activity and still consuming sports foods and sports drinks; and parents of children (aged under 15 years) consuming sports products. The key…
