Assigning foods and dietary supplements nutrients and measures data
Assigning foods and dietary supplements nutrients and measures data To be able to estimate food, dietary supplement and nutrient intakes from the 2011-13 Australian Health Survey (AHS), information is needed on the nutrient content of the foods and dietary supplements consumed and how much of a food or dietary supplement a person has eaten. A coding or classification system is also needed to group similar foods and dietary supplements for reporting purposes. All foods, measures and dietary supplements in AUSNUT 2011-13 reflect the foods, dietary supplements and food portions consumed during the 2011-12 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) and the 2012-13 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS)…

Sodium levels in a range of packaged and take-away foods
Sodium levels in a range of packaged and take-away foods Introduction The level of sodium intake by Australians has been of growing interest in recent times. Most of the sodium in our food comes from sodium chloride (table salt), which is added to foods for flavour and as a preservative. Sodium also occurs naturally in almost all foods and can be present in processed foods due to the use of some food additives, for example, sodium bicarbonate (bi-carb soda or baking soda) used as a raising agent in cakes and biscuits. In order to gather additional information on levels of sodium in a range of foods, FSANZ conducted an analytical survey of some packaged and take-away foods available in New South Wales and Western Australia. This data will be used to help conduct future dietary…

FSANZ Board approves updated GM food definitions
FSANZ Board approves updated GM food definitions Food ministers from Australia and New Zealand are now considering a proposal to modernise how genetically modified (GM) food is defined in the Food Standards Code, following approval by our Board. Under the changes, outdated, process-based definitions for GM food will be replaced with clearer, outcome-based ones. The updated definitions, developed through Proposal P1055 – Definitions for gene technology and new breeding techniques, bring the Code into line with current science and international regulatory approaches used in economies like Canada, Japan and England. Foods produced using new breeding techniques, such as forms of gene editing, will not be considered GM if no novel DNA is introduced as an outcome of the genetic change. These types of changes are…

Second call for comment on the review of permissions for caffeine in food
Second call for comment on the review of permissions for caffeine in food Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is undertaking a second round of public consultation on its review of the addition of caffeine to food. Proposed amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) aim to clarify the regulations around the retail sale of caffeine and its addition to food. FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said the review followed changes to the Code in 2019, which prohibited the retail sale of pure and highly concentrated caffeine products. “This review has considered whether additional measures are required in relation to caffeine in food, particularly formulated supplementary sports foods,” Dr Cuthbert said. “A number of amendments to the regulation of caffeine in foods are proposed to ensure the continued protection of…
