Food Standards Code

Note: The revised Food Standards Code came into effect on 1 March 2016.

Read background information about the Code Revision here.

The Standards in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code are legislative instruments under the Legislation Act 2003. The authoritative versions of these Standards are on the Australian Government Federal Register of Legislation (formerly ComLaw) or via the links below. The PDF file for each standard on the Legislation Register site is the authoritative legal version. To access the PDF (or Word version), once you open the Legislation Register page for each standard via the links below, click on the link to the latest compilation of a standard (displayed with the tick), then click the ‘Download’ tab in the light blue ribbon on the page. The documents will then appear.

You can also access related documents such as previous versions of the standard or related explanatory statements via these links.

Read important information about accessing standards on the Federal Register of Legislation.

You can access Food Standards Gazette notices here.

FSANZ does not provide advice on compliance with the Code. You may wish to engage a lawyer or consultant for compliance advice. The Code is enforced by state and territory and New Zealand agencies and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources for imported food. Accessing the Code

You can download individual standards from the Legislation Register website for free below, or you can purchase a copy of the Code from the following businesses:

Please note that compilations for the Code are registered on the Legislation Register as soon as possible after any amendments take effect.  Where there is a delay in the date of effect following gazettal, to assist stakeholders until the relevant compilations are registered, FSANZ provides updated standards where applicable, but these versions are for information only and are not to be treated as authoritative versions of the standards.
