OTHER MATTERS

Novel Foods Standard commencement date

On 16 June 2001 the new Novel Foods Standard comes into effect in Australia and New Zealand.   Novel foods are new foods for which there is insufficient knowledge in the community to ensure safe use.   Novel foods must now pass a rigorous pre-market safety assessment by ANZFA before they are allowed on the shelves.   This process is similar to the pre-market safety assessment of genetically modified foods and food additives.

Information for potential applicants can found on the ANZFA website in the document -Guidelines for amending the Australian Food Standards Code 'Standard A19 Novel Foods'which is available on the website under [Food Standards] & [Information for Applicants].
