NOTIFICATION CIRCULAR 07-04
This Notification Circular includes notices that are required to be given to the public, submitters and appropriate government agencies, under theFood Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991(FSANZ Act). All references below to sections of legislation, are to the FSANZ Act unless otherwise indicated.

PROGRESS ON APPLICATIONS AND PROPOSALS
NOTICES. The notice below was published on 11 August 2004 inThe Australian and The New Zealand Herald newspapers as well as on the Food Standards Australia New Zealand website.
INITIAL ASSESSMENT - PROPOSALS [s.14A(1)]
FSANZ has prepared a Proposal for the development or variation of the following food regulatory measure; will make a Draft Assessment of the Proposal; and invites written submissions on matters relevant to the Proposal to be made to FSANZ by20 October 2004:
- Proposal P293–Nutrition, Health & Related Claims: to implement the Ministerial Council’s Policy Guideline on Nutrition, Health and Related Claims, for the development of the regulatory framework for the management of nutrition, health and related claims.
DRAFT ASSESSMENT – PROPOSALS [s.17AB(1)]
After making a Draft Assessment of the following Proposal, FSANZ decided to abandon the Proposal:
- Proposal P250–Health, Nutrient & Related Claims: to develop a co-regulatory management system for health, nutrient content and related claims.
FINAL ASSESSMENT AND COUNCIL NOTIFICATION – APPLICATIONS AND PROPOSALS – DRAFT STANDARDS [s.19(1)]
After making a Final Assessment in relation to draft variation for the following Proposal, FSANZ decided to reject the draft under section 18 of the FSANZ Act. FSANZ has given the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council (Ministerial Council) written notification of the rejection:
- Proposal P234–Criteria & Conditions for making Nutrition Content & Related Claims: to review the criteria and conditions for making nutrient content and other related claims and review the Code of Practice on Nutrient Claims in food labels and in advertisements.
OTHER MATTERS
Amendment 73 Published
Amendment 73 to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code was published by FSANZ on 5 August 2004. It included amendments resulting from the following Applications and Proposal:
- Application A503 – Collagen, Processing Aid for Wines.
- Application A510 – Maximum Residue Limits (August, Sept, Oct 2003).
- Proposal P281 – Anomalies in Standard 1.4.2 – Maximum Residue Limits.
Workshops on Nutrition, Health and Related Claims
Registrations are currently being taken for Nutrition and Health Related Claims Briefing Workshops which are being held to assist those people who may be interested in developing a submission, or those who wish to be better informed on progress with the development of a Standard. The dates and locations for the full-day workshops are:
18 August – Sydney
20 August – Melbourne
3 September – Wellington
7 September – Auckland
