FSANZ considers Country of Origin Labelling
12 May 2005
The FSANZ Board today progressed discussions on the development of the proposed standard for Country of Origin Labelling.
The Board has noted the concerns raised by governments, consumers, producers and industry following the period of public consultation.
FSANZ supports the consumer’s right to have ready access to the necessary information to make informed food choices. FSANZ considers that Country of Origin Labelling is about consumers having the right information about where their food is coming from and is committed to having this information readily available.
The proposed country of origin labelling standard will reinforce the availability of this information to consumers, especially for unpackaged foods such as fish, fruit, vegetables and nuts.
Public consultation is a vital part of the FSANZ standards setting process and public comment is essential in achieving the best outcome. FSANZ welcomes the public discussion on an issue that has important ramifications for consumers and retailers of unpackaged food. FSANZ will take careful note of the issues being put forward in the public consultation process.
FSANZ emphasises that no final decision has been made on this proposed standard.
FSANZ will be working closely with consumers, producers, industry and governments as it progresses the Country of Origin Labelling standard to ensure that the best possible outcome is achieved.
