Phthalates in beverages and foods in Taiwan
June 2011
FSANZ has been advised about the possibility of Di-Ethyl Hexyl Phthalate (DEHP) and Di-Isononyl Phthalate (DINP) being added to certain foods and beverages manufactured in Taiwan.
To date only one affected product (an asparagus juice) has been identified as being exported to Australia. This product has been withdrawn from sale.
DEHP and DINP have legitimate uses as plasticisers in food contact packaging material. They are not permitted as food additives.
The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration is continuing to track affected products and is informing agencies in countries where these products have been exported.
We are continuing to monitor information from overseas and further action may be taken as more information becomes available.
