Committees and groups

FSANZ manages a number of committees and groups through which it engages with consumers, Indigenous representatives, industry representatives and public health professionals. The main committees and groups are detailed below.

Consumer and Public Health Dialogue

The Consumer and Public Health Dialogue (CPHD) is a new consultative forum, which aims to build stronger relationships between consumer and public health groups and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). The CPHD is made up of representatives from peak consumer and public health bodies and public health academics.

The CPHD will broaden FSANZ’s understanding of the key consumer and public health issues relating to food and help inform our communication activities. It will also help us better target the research that we do.

Consumer Liaison Committee

The Consumer Liaison Committee (CLC) comprises mainly ‘grassroots’ consumers who provide a range of perspectives and views on consumer issues.

The CLC currently has 14 members including representatives of Australian and New Zealand consumer bodies; an Indigenous Australian representative; one Maori/Pacific Islander representative and a representative from the National Council of Women of Australia and one from the National Council of Women of New Zealand.

The role of the committee is to:

  • alert FSANZ to key issues of current or emerging consumer concern
  • advise on consultation methodologies, including ways of reaching vulnerable and hard to reach groups
  • facilitate joint work between FSANZ and consumer groups
  • participate in standards development processes through membership on Standards Development Advisory Committees and other consultative committee or activities where appropriate.

Retailers and Manufacturers Liaison Committee

The Retailers and Manufacturers Liaison Committee (RMLC) provides an opportunity for ongoing dialogue between FSANZ and industry. The RMLC allows members to engage in informed discussion about specific issues relating to standards development and standards setting processes and to collaborate on food safety emergencies.

The purpose of the committee is to:

  • maintain an ongoing dialogue between members to improve information sharing on issues of common interest
  • review, assess and if necessary revises the protocol used in the event of an industry- based food safety emergency situation (food safety emergencies – a communication protocol).
