Consumer Study on Food Allergen Labelling: Follow-on Survey 2008-09. Evaluation Series Report (2009)

In 2008, FSANZ commissioned TNS Social Research to undertake this study, which follows on from the first food allergen labelling survey carried out in 2003. The research used a questionnaire to examine the perspectives, attitudes and behaviours of consumers in Australia and New Zealand with regard to allergen labelling. As with the earlier study, this follow-on study primarily looked at the revised allergen labelling requirements relating to mandatory declarations of certain substances in food, namely wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, soy, milk, tree nuts, sesame seeds and added sulphites. These studies assist to evaluate the effectiveness of allergen labelling in protecting public health and safety by ensuring adequate and appropriate information is provided to consumers with food allergies, allowing them to make informed choices about the foods they eat.

This research was conducted as part of the FSANZ Evaluation Strategy 2004-2008. More research conducted as a part of the Evaluation Strategy is also available.
