Guide for Referees
As a referee you are an important part of the selection process. The information you provide should be free of favouritism or discrimination.
You are asked to provide comments on the applicant for each of the selection criteria for the job, where possible. An Assessment Rating Scale is attached to assist you in providing comments, however you are not required to provide ratings if you do not wish to.
You may be asked to provide either a written or oral referee report.
Where a written report is requested, you are asked to complete the attached Referee Report Sheet and return it to the applicant.
If you are asked to provide an oral report, a member of the Selection Advisory Committee or a person nominated by the Committee will contact you. You may be contacted to provide further comments or clarification at any stage of the selection process
When providing a referee report
- You should give specific examples of the applicant’s work and key achievements to illustrate the applicant’s abilities, knowledge, experience and personal qualities in relation to the criteria.
- Your comments and rating should be based on the applicant’s capability for the position in question, having regard to their work experience while they were working with you.
- Additional comments can be used to emphasise any strengths and weaknesses.
- In some circumstances you may not be able to comment on one or more criteria and you should indicate this accordingly.
- Written comments should not be prepared by the applicant for your signature.
- The applicant should be made aware of any adverse comments that you provide.
Thank you for your assistance.
