(Australia only)
Standard 4.2.1 Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood is now part of the Food Standards Code
Standard 4.2.1 was gazetted on 26 May 2005. Seafood businesses will be required to comply with this standard no later than two years from the date of gazettal.
To help with interpreting Standard 4.2.1, FSANZ has developed Safe Seafood Australia . This guide is intended primarily for use by government agencies responsible for enforcing the requirements of the Food Standards Code relating to seafood. The guide provides examples and explanations to assist interpretation.
The guide may also assist seafood businesses through its explanations and examples. Food businesses seeking guidance on how to comply with the requirements of the standard should contact their State or Territory enforcement agency.
This first edition of Safe Seafood Australia will be reviewed and amended as necessary. Readers are invited to provide feedback to FSANZ. Contact details for providing comment are contained on page ii of the guide.
Background to development of the Standard
In March 2005, the FSANZ Board approved the Final Assessment Report for the Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood. That Report contains a scientific evaluation of risk within the seafood industry and management options to minimise this risk. It proposed applying basic food safety requirements to the seafood industry and documented food safety management systems to the highest risk sector of the industry, that is seafood businesses that handle oysters and other bivalves.
