Primary Production and Processing Standard for Dairy

(Australia only)

The Primary Production and Processing Standard for Dairy (Standard 4.2.4) is part of a series of national food safety standards.

PPP Standards (which only apply in Australia) aim to strengthen food safety and traceability throughout the food supply chain from paddock to plate.

Standard 4.2.4 took effect in October 2008 and sets out a number of food safety requirements, including implementing documented food safety programs for dairy primary production, collection, transportation and processing that protect public health and safety and are cost effective across all jurisdictions.

While the Australian dairy industry produces dairy products of a high level of safety, the former state-based framework resulted in some variation in requirements across jurisdictions. The single PPP Standard saves money and improves transparency in demonstrating uniformly safe regulatory requirements to Australian consumers, importing countries and trading partners.

However the Standard does not apply to retail activities; these are covered by Chapter Three of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

To help with interpreting Standard 4.2.4, FSANZ has developed a guide in three parts:

Part 1: Dairy Primary Production Requirements

Part 2: Dairy Collection and Transport Requirements

Part 3: Dairy Processing

This guide is intended primarily for government agencies responsible for enforcing the Standard, though its explanations and examples may also help dairy businesses. However, dairy businesses seeking further guidance on how to comply with the Standard should contact their state or territory dairy authority.
