Safety Assessment of Genetically Modified Foods

FSANZ assesses the safety of GM foods in accordance with internationally established scientific principles and guidelines developed through the work of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Health Organization and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This guidance document provides the rigour and the flexibility required to conduct a safety assessment of a broad range of foods. Flexibility is needed to allow GM foods to be assessed on a case-by-case basis and to take into consideration future scientific advances.

Determining the Equivalence of Food Safety Measures

This guidance document provides a general framework for determining the equivalence of food safety measures in a wide range of imported or domestically produced foods.  

Deriving Energy Factors for Food Ingredients

This guidance document is to be used to assist in assigning an energy factor for novel macronutrient substitutes or other food ingredients that are not currently assigned a specific energy factor in Standard 1.2.8 – Nutrition Information Requirements. Energy factors are required for food ingredients in order to establish the overall energy content of a food product.   This information is required to support the labelling statements on low and reduced energy food products.

Undertaking Microbiological Risk Assessments

This guidance document outlines the framework employed by FSANZ when undertaking microbiological risk assessments. It describes the structured approach to using scientific evidence and data in assessing risks. Over time, the methodology used will advance and improvements in data will assist in reducing the uncertainty and variability inherent in many microbiological risk assessments.

Processing Aids Guidance Document

This Guideline Document serves two purposes:

1. To assist applicants to provide the appropriate information when submitting an application to change Standard 1.3.3 –Processing Aidsand
2. To provide a better understanding of why this information is required and how it is used to assess an application in relation to the provisions of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991.

This Guideline Document serves two purposes:

1. To assist applicants to provide the appropriate information when submitting an application to change Standard 1.4.1 –Contaminants and Natural Toxicantsand
2. To provide a better understanding of why this information is required and how it is used to assess an application in relation to the provisions of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991.
