Information for childcare centres and schools

Schools play an important role in helping to manage food allergies.

The Allergen Collaboration has agreed a number of key messages for childcare centres and schools in regard to food allergens and these are listed below.

  • Make sure your staff are trained by appropriately qualified people in food allergen risks, management and communication so that they can:
    • minimise a child’s exposure to allergens as much as possible
    • ensure staff are always prepared to respond appropriately in case of life-threatening reaction (anaphylaxis) ensure
    • children /students with allergies are able to participate in the same educational and recreational school activities as their peers.
  • Staff should be aware of a child’s ASCIA (Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy) Action Plan and/or Health Care/Management Plan.
  • Organisations providing food services should refer to the food service key messages.
