Food Standards Matters
Application A475 – Hexose Oxidase as a Processing Aid
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application to approve the use of an enzyme, Hexose oxidase as a processing aid. The Board approved the Final Assessment Report, including the draft variation to Standard 1.3.3 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board' s decision will now be notified to Ministers.
Proposal P251 - Uncooked Comminuted Fermented Meat
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report on a Proposal to protect public health and safety by identifying appropriate regulatory measures that are effective to mitigate the risks of EHEC infection as a result of consumption of uncooked comminuted fermented meat. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report, including the draft variations to Standard 1.6.1 and 1.6.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board' s decision will now be notified to Ministers.
Application A424 – Fortification of Foods with Calcium
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for Application A424 – Fortification of Foods with Calcium which permits the addition of calcium to fruit- and vegetable juices, fruit- and vegetable drinks, fruit cordial, soups and savoury biscuits. The Board asked staff to further consider some issues and report back to the September meeting.
Application A452 – Twinsweet
The Board considered the Preliminary Final Assessment Report for an Application which approves the use of Twinsweet as a new intense sweetener, aspartame-acesulphame, under Standard 1.3.1 – Food Additives in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The paper will be released for public comment.
Application A470 – Formulated Beverages
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for Application A470 – Formulated Beverages which addresses the purported disadvantage that Australian beverage manufacturers are experiencing with the importation of formulated beverages from New Zealand under the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement. The Board agreed to discuss this matter further at an out-of-session teleconference.
Proposal P262 – Exemption from Mandatory Labelling of Sodium – Update on progress and request for consideration out of session
The Board considered the update on progress and request for consideration out-of-session for Proposal P262 – Exemption from Mandatory Labelling of Sodium. The Board agreed to consider the First Review Report on P262 out of session in early August 2003.
Application A482 – Plant Protein Products, Wine Processing Aid
The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to permit the use of plant proteins as processing aids during production of wine. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A492 – Lysophospholipase as a Processing Aid
The Board considered a Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to permit the use of a new enzyme, Lysophospholipase (EC number 3.1.1.5). The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A481 – Food Derived from Glufosinate Ammonium Tolerant Soybeans Lines A2704-12 and A5547-127
The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report on an Application which seeks to approve food derived from genetically modified (GM) soybean lines A2704-12 and A5547-127 under Standard 1.5.2 – Food Produced Using Gene Technology of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A476 – Acidified Sodium Chlorite as a Processing Aid
The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report on Application A476 – Acidified Sodium Chlorite as a Processing Aid. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A459 – Geographic Indications to Describe Spirits
The Board considered the Initial/Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to vary clause 4 of Standard 2.7.5 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to ensure certainty, accuracy and truthfulness in the use of geographic indications to describe spirits. The Board agreed to the Initial / Draft Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.

Proposal P274 – Review of Minimum Age Labelling of Foods for Infants
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for Proposal P274 – review of Minimum Age Labelling of Foods for Infants which seeks to review the minimum age labelling requirements for infant foods, to resolve an apparent inconsistency with the revised Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents (incorporating Infant Feeding Guidelines for Health Workers), released in June 2003. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report which will be released for public consultation on 16 July 2003, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A472 - D-tagatose (Extension of Time)
The Board considered the need to extend the time limit for consideration of Application A472. The Board agreed, pursuant to section 35(2) of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991, to extend the time limit for Application A472 by six months to 4 December 2003.
