Food Standards Matters

Application A464 – Wholegrain – Definition

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend the definition of  “wholegrain”  in Standard 2.1.1 – Cereals and Cereal Products.  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A493 – Iodine as a Processing Aid

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks approval for the use of elemental iodine as a washing/sanitising agent for foods. The Application requests approval to use iodine as a processing aid for fruit, vegetables, nuts and eggs.  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A513 – Octanoic Acid

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.3.3 – Processing Aids of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to approve the use of octanoic acid as a processing aid in water in various formulations to be used as an antimicrobial treatment on red meat and poultry carcasses and fresh fruits and vegetables.   The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A522 – DHA-Rich Oil from Ulkenia sp

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.5.1 – Novel Foods to approve the use of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich oil derived from marine micro-algae (Ulkenia sp.), referred to as DHA-rich oil (Ulkenia sp.).  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A534 – MRLs (March, April, May 04)

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for non-antibiotic agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Standard 1.4.2 – Maximum Residue Limits of the Code.  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Proposal P265 – Primary Production and Processing Standard for Seafood

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for a Proposal which recommends that there be a single, national food safety standard for the primary production and processing of seafood.  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Proposal P284 – Minor Amendments Omnibus V.  

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for a Proposal correcting minor errors that raised issues of minor significance or complexity in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.  The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A424 – Addition of Calcium to Food

The Board considered an Application for which the Ministerial Council requested a First Review of the decision taken at FSANZ8 in relation to Application A424 – Fortification of Foods with Calcium and extended the period for completion of this Review to May 2005.  This Application seeks to amend Standard 1.3.2 – Vitamins and Minerals of the Code to permit the addition of calcium to fruit and vegetable juices and drinks, soups and savoury biscuits.  The Board agreed to the First Review Report which reaffirmed the Board’s decision at Final Assessment and the proposed recommendations and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Application A500 – Added Calcium to Beverages from Cereals

The Board considered a paper seeking to extend the time limit for consideration of Application A500 – Added Calcium to Beverages from Cereals.  The Board agreed, pursuant to section 35(2) of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (the Act), to extend the time limit for Application A500 by six months to 9 December 2005.

Application A499 – Roquefort Cheese

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the sale of Roquefort cheese in Australia only.  This Application was made on behalf of French manufacturers and exporters of Roquefort cheese.  The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

Application A543 – GM Corn

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code to approve food derived from a genetically modified, insect-protected, herbicide-tolerant corn.  The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

Application A544 – Ice Structuring Protein

The Board considered a Draft Assessment for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.3.3 – Processing Aids of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to approve the use of Ice Structuring Protein Type III HPLC 12 (ISP) as a processing aid for the preparation of ice cream and edible ices.  The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

Proposal P292 – Country of Origin Labelling of Food

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to review the current provisions regarding mandatory country of origin labelling contained in Standard 1.1A.3 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.   The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
