Food Standards Matters
Application A535 – Maximum Residue Limits – Neomycin (Antibiotic)
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 – Maximum Residue Limits of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The proposed amendments to the Standard would align MRLs in the Code for the antibiotic Neomycin with the MRLs in APVMA’s MRL Standard. The Board agreed, in principal, to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Codeand will conduct a Final Assessment of the matter in February 2005.
Application A538 – Maximum Residue Limits – Benzocaine (Local Anaesthetic)
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 – Maximum Residue Limits of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The proposed amendments to the Standard would align MRLs in the Code for the local anaesthetic Benzocaine with the MRLs in APVMA’s MRL Standard. The Board agreed, in principal, to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Codeand will conduct a Final Assessment of the matter in February 2005.
Application A539 – Maximum Residue Limits – Avilamycin (Antibiotic)
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks the establishment of a Maximum Residue Limit for pig meat and offal for the use of the antibiotic Avilamycin into the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed, in principal, to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Codeand will conduct a Final Assessment of the matter in February 2005.
Application A526 – Maximum Residue Limits (January, February 2004)
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Maximum Residue Limits for non-antibiotic agricultural and veterinary chemicals in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed, in principal, to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Codeand will conduct a Final Assessment of the matter in February 2005.
Proposal P294 – Variation to Standard 1.4.2 – Maximum Residue Limits
The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks an urgent amendment to Standard 1.4.2 to correct a technical anomaly in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed, in principal, to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Codeand will conduct a Final Assessment of the matter in February 2005.
Application A509 – Food Derived from Insect Protected Cotton Line COT102
The Board considered the First Review Report, which reviewed the draft variations approved by the Board at Final Assessment for Application A509, as requested by the Ministerial Council, reconsidering the Final Assessment Report, its recommendations and the variation to Standard 1.5.2 – Food Produced Using Gene Technology, of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code,in accordance with the requirements of the Food Standards Australia New ZealandAct 1991.The Board agreed to the First Review Report which reaffirmed the Board’s decision at Final Assessment and the proposed recommendations and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.
Application A528 – Maximum Iodine Limit in Formulated Supplementary Foods for Young Children
The Board agreed to extend the time limit, pursuant to pursuant to section 35(2) of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991, for Application A528 by four months to 4 June 2005.
Application A469 – Saccharin in Water-Based Flavoured Drinks
The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend category 14.1.3 of Schedule 1 in Standard 1.3.1 – Food Additives in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A525 – Food Derived from Glyphosate-Tolerant Sugar Beet H7-1
The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to vary the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to approve food derived from a genetically modified herbicide-tolerant sugar beet, sugar beet line H7-1 for inclusion in Standard 1.5.2 – Food Produced Using Gene Technology. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Application A489 – Allergen Labelling on Single Serve Packages in Outer Packaging
The Board agreed to extend the time limit, pursuant to section 35(2) of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code,for Application A489 by six months to 25 October 2005.
Application A516 – Lipase from Candida Cylindraceaas a Processing Aid (Enzyme)
The Board agreed to extend the time limit, pursuant to section 35(2) of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, for Application A516 by six months to 8 September 2005.
Application A517 – Lipase fromMucor Javanicusas a Processing Aid (Enzyme)
The Board agreed to extend the time limit, pursuant to section 35(2) of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code,for Application A517 by six months to 8 September 2005.
Proposal P230 – Consideration of Mandatory Fortification with Iodine
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to determine the most effective mechanism to improve the iodine status of Australian and New Zealand populations to iodine sufficiency as defined by authoritative international guidelines, and in doing so reduce the risk of iodine deficiency for vulnerable population groups such as the developing foetus and young children . The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Proposal P272 – A Review of Certain Labelling Requirements for Food for Retail Sale and Food for Catering Purposes
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to review and amend where appropriate, certain labelling requirements in clause 2 in Standard 1.2.1 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Proposal P279 – Review of Schedule 1 and Related Clauses – Standard 1.3.1 – Food Additives
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to formally review the content and relevant clauses relating to permissions in Schedule 1 of Standard 1.3.1 – Food Additives, after practical implementation of the Standard for over 2 years. The Review will allow for consideration of comments received from stakeholders in the period. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Proposal P291 – Review of Novel Foods Standard
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to review the regulation for novel foods and the mechanism for making determinations as to novelty. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
Proposal P296 – Primary Production and Processing Standard for Dairy
The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to recommend a new Primary Production and Processing Standards for Dairy. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.
