Food Standards Matters

Application A506 – Maximum Residue limits – Florfenicol (Antibiotic)

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to include the addition of Maximum Residue Limits for cattle and pig commodities, for the antibiotic florfenicol. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

 

Application A520 – Maximum Residue limits

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to include the addition of Maximum Residue Limits for non-antibiotic agricultural and veterinary chemicals. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

 

Application A521 – Maximum Residue limits – Lasalocid (Antibiotic)

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to include the establishment of Maximum Residue Limits for the antibiotic lasalocid, for poultry commodities. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

 

Application A491 – Resistant Maltodextrin as Dietary Fibre

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend the Table to subclause 18(1) of Standard 1.2.8 – Nutrition Information Requirements of the Australia New ZealandFood Standards Code to include the method AOAC 2001.03 – ‘Total Dietary Fibre in Foods Containing Resistant Maltodextrin’ for the measurement of dietary fibre in foods containing resistant maltodextrins. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

 

Application A505 – Diacylglycerol Oil

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to approve the use of diacylglycerol oil (DAG-oil) as a novel food under Standard 1.5.1 - Novel Foods of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.   The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

 

Application A509 – Food Derived from Insect Protected Cotton Line COT102

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to approve food derived from a genetically modified (GM) insect-protected cotton, cotton line COT102 under Standard 1.5.2 – Food Produced using Gene Technology – of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to theAustralia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.


Proposal P278 – Use of Nicotine and Nicotiana Species

The Board considered the Final Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to review the issues associated with the use ofNicotiana species in foods and, if necessary, to review the current food standards in relation to this matter in order to ensure that public health and safety is adequately protected. The Board agreed to the Final Assessment Report and the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers.

Proposal P264 – Review of Gluten Claims with Specific Reference to Oats and Malt

The Board considered the First Review Report, which reviewed the draft variations approved by the Board at Final Assessment for Proposal P264, as requested by the Ministerial Council, in accordance with the requirements of the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act1991.The Board agreed to the First Review Report which reaffirmed the Board’s decision at Final Assessment and the proposed recommendations and the Board’s decision will now be notified to Ministers. considering the First Review Report, its recommendations and the variation to Standard 1.2.8 - Nutrition Information Requirements, of the Code,

 

Proposal P242 – Food for Special Medical Purposes

The Board considered the Preliminary Final Assessment Report for a Proposal which seeks to complete the review and development of harmonised Australian and New Zealand regulations covering food for special medical purposes. The Board agreed to the Preliminary Final Assessment Report and to seek public submissions in relation to the proposed draft variations to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

 

Application A493 – Iodine as a Processing Aid

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to approve the use of iodine as a processing aid under Standard 1.3.3 Processing Aids of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

The Board also considered a request to extend the time limit for consideration of this Application in accordance with the requirements of the Code. The Board agreed to extend the time limit by 6 months to 3 February 2005.

 

Application A522 –DHA-Rich Oil as a Novel Food

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to approve the use of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich oil derived from marine micro-algae, referred to as DHA-rich oil. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Application A528 – Maximum Iodine Limit in Formulated Supplementary Foods for Young Children

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks to amend Standard 2.9.3 – Formulated Meal Replacements and Formulated Supplementary Foods to increase the maximum permitted quantity of iodine per serving form 35 to 70 micrograms in formulated supplementary foods for young children. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Application A535 – Maximum Residue Limits – Neomycin (Antibiotic)

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to include the establishment of Maximum Residue Limits for meat commodities, for the antibiotic neomycin. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Application A536 – Maximum Residue Phosphine

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. The proposed amendments to the Standard would align Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) in the Code for phosphine with the MRLs in the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority’s MRL Standard. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Application A538 – Maximum Residue Limits – Benzocaine

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to reduce the Maximum Residue Limits for the local anaesthetic benzocaine to a new lower limit of quantification. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Application A539 – Maximum Residue Limits – Avilamycin (Antibiotic)

The Board considered the Draft Assessment Report for an Application which seeks amendments to Standard 1.4.2 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to include the establishment of Maximum Residue Limits for pig meat and offal, for the antibiotic avilamycin. The Board agreed to the Draft Assessment Report (subject to minor amendments), which will be released in the near future for public consultation, prior to further consideration by the Board.

 

Proposal P234 – Criteria and Conditions for Making Nutrition Content and Related Claims

The Board considered the Report which seeks to reject proposal P234 which will be superseded by Proposal P293, Review of Nutrition Health and Related claims. The Board agreed to reject P234.

 

Proposal P250 – Development of a Co-Regulatory System for Health, Nutrition Content and Related Claims (Abandonment at Draft Assessment)

The Board considered the Report which seeks to abandon Proposal P250 which will be superseded by Proposal P293, Review ofNutrition, Health and Related claims. The Board agreed to abandon P250.

 

Proposal P293 – Nutrition, Health & Related Claims

The Board considered the Initial Assessment Report for Proposal P293 the purpose of which is to develop a Standard for the regulation of Nutrition, Health and Related claims and an appropriate management system to support enforcement of the Standard in accordance with the recently approved Ministerial Council Policy Guidelines on this matter. The Board agreed to the Initial Assessment, which will be released for public consultation in the near future,. The issue previously addressed under proposal P234 and P250 are being considered under this proposal.

Other matters

 

Listeria Brochure

A new updated brochure has been approved by the Board for distribution to interested stakeholders, such as, doctors, health professionals, hospitals, and others. The brochure was publicly released on 29 July 2004.
